Student Loan Forgiveness is now live! On Friday evening, October 14th, the Biden-Harris Administration has finally started the application process for students seeking debt relief. They plan to cancel up to $10,000 in debt for individuals making under $125,000.
According to the Department of Education, students can now submit their application on the beta website – thus starting beta site testing. This testing will allow the department to monitor site performance through real-world use, refine processes, and uncover any possible bugs prior to official launch.
That website is available at: https://studentaid.gov/debt-relief/application. Those who apply for the debt relief on the beta site will receive a confirmation email, but their application will not be processed until the site formally launches some time before the end of October. Those who pass are expected to receive debt relief within weeks.
Here’s how it goes. Log in to your account on the FSA website or create a new account if you don’t have one. The form to apply will include information on the debt relief, who qualifies for it and how it works. It will ask applicants for information including their full names, Social Security number, date of birth, phone number and an email address. You can start your application here!
Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
If you qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and and apply for the limited PSLF waiver by October 31st, it’s possible that you could get all of your student debt canceled, not just the $20,000. Note that the Student Loan Forgiveness and Service Loan Forgiveness are two different programs.
This program provides up to $20,000 of relief! After October 1st, they can erase your student debt if you’re a teacher, nurse, or other public service worker and made 120 student loan payments.
Here’s what to qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program:
- Work for U.S. federal, state, local, tribal, or not-for-profit organizations for ten years
- Work full-time for the agency or organization
- Have direct loans (or consolidate federal loans into a direct loan)
- Repay your loans under an income-driven repayment plan
- Have made 120 qualifying payments on the loans
Check out the other deadlines:
November 15th, 2022: Apply by November 15th and you might have a chance to get student debt relief by the end of the year.
January 1st, 2023: Student loan payments have been on pause since March of 2020 as a result of the pandemic, so starting January 1st 2023 that pause is ending.
December 31st, 2023: This is the last day to apply for the Public Student Loan Forgiveness program.
