23andMe Files for Bankruptcy – Customers Advised to Delete Genetic Data

23andMe, the DNA testing company, has filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. This follows stock declines, a data breach, and staff layoffs. The bankruptcy has raised privacy concerns for its 15 million users.

The 2023 data breach exposed security weaknesses. 23andMe’s policy allows data transfer during bankruptcy. Experts urge customers to delete their data, as DNA is unchangeable and misuse could lead to serious harm.

California’s Attorney General’s office has issued advice for deleting data, destroying samples, and revoking research permissions. While state laws vary, this guidance is a helpful starting point for worried 23andMe customers.
